  • Vehicle of the Week - '14 Rubicon Unlimited

    custom-jeep-wrangler-mango-tango-273029-lightingMost new Jeep Wrangler models that roll through the shop are the standard JK-Unlimited on a 3.5" lift and 35s, or 4.5" on 37s, and while they certainly appeal to a wide audience out there, to some, these vehicles tend to blend in, as everyone and their cousin appears to have one nowadays. Not so with this 2014; both inside and out, this JKU runs against the grain. With the 8" of lift, 42" tires, and Teraflex High Pinion 60 axles, this Jeep stands out from the JKU crowd of mall-crawlers, daily-drivers, and trail-rigs alike.custom-jeep-wrangler-mango-tango-atx-slab-beadlocks-273029Being a 2014, this JKU features the new 3.6L V-6 Pentastar engine, which is a vast improvement over the old 3.8L "minivan" motor found in early-model JK Wranglers. This Jeep also features a 6-speed manual transmission, further distinguishing it from the growing crowd of 2007-and-up automatic Jeeps. The gear ratio in the '60 axles is 5.38, the proper ratio to help the V-6 engine in turning the large 42x14.50x17 Goodyear Wrangler MTR Kevlar tires. This JKU also features ARB air lockers, an ARB air compressor, and an AEV Snorkel, to add to it's off-road prowess. In order to fit the large 42" tires, the suspension system consists of a BDS 6.5" Long Arm, coupled with a set of 1.5" coil spacers. PSC Hydro Assist steering and a Teraflex Big Brake Kit round out the upgrades necessary to run these large tires.custom-jeep-wrangler-mango-tango-aev-snorkel-273029When planning for 40" or 42" tires on a Wrangler JK, we recommend upgrading to '60 axles, as seen on Project: VANDAL, as the stock Dana-30 or Dana-44 axles on the JK are not up to par. Some may suggest trussing or upgrading the axle shafts on the stock setup for 40's, but this fails to address the internal parts of the axle, such as the carrier, or the ring/pinion gear and bearings. Steering-assist and the big brake kit are recommended as well, in addition to the proper gear ratio; in this case, 5.38, as this is essential in retaining drive-ability on and off-road.custom-jeep-wrangler-mango-tango-ace-rear-bumper-tire-carrier-rear-273029For lighting, this JKU features Rigid Industries D2 LED Pods, Recon turn signals, a 50" LED Light Bar, and LED headlights. For recovery, this Wrangler is equipped with a Hi-Lift Jack and a 10k lb Winch. LOD Rock Sliders, an ACE Rear Bumper and Tire Carrier, and Smittybilt front stinger round out the bumper and armor package. To remove the weak-point in the factory roll-bar system, common on all Wrangler models, a Rock Hard 4x4 Sport Cage was installed, painted to match the OEM Mango-Tango color. Also worth noting are the ATX Slab 17x9 beadlock wheels, JKS Quick Disconnects, Bushwacker Fender Flares, a Superchips Trail Dash, and the Neoprene Seat Covers.custom-jeep-wrangler-mango-tango-273029-interior-seats

  • Vehicle of the Week - 2006 Brute Rubicon

    2005-custom-jeep-wrangler-aev-brute-black-yakima-roof-rack-front-passThis week, we're taking a look at a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Brute Conversion. This conversion was done by AEV, and came through the shop this past week. Needless to say, it didn't last long! This Brute, being an '06 Rubicon, features all of the off-road goodies, such as Dana-44 front and rear axles with OEM air-lockers, the bulletproof 4.0L Inline-6, and the Rock-Trac 4-wheel drive system. This Jeep has about 75k on the clock, and looks to be street-driven, with little to no off-road miles.2005-custom-jeep-wrangler-aev-brute-black-front-warn-winch-aev-front-bumper-tj-high-line-fendersThe most obvious aftermarket addition is the Brute conversion kit by AEV (American Expedition Vehicles), which includes the fender flares, highline fender kit, rocker guards, half-cab top, and the bed itself. This truck is also equipped with a 2" OME (Old Man Emu) suspension system, and is rolling on 35" BFGoodrich KM2 M/T tires. The Jeep Wrangler TJ and LJ platform was replaced by the JK in 2007, and recently, AEV has stopped producing the highline fender kits, as pictured above. However, you can still see these unique trucks on the street from time-to-time, and they certainly turn heads. This one is sure to be on the road for years to come, and at 75k, the Inline-6 is just getting broken in!

  • Vehicle of the Week - 2006 "Sleeper" LJ

    2006-blue-lj-5-7-hemi-frontThis week, we're taking a look at a unique 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon; also known as an LJ. Produced for the 2004-2006 model years, the Jeep Wrangler LJ provides a 10-inch longer wheelbase than the Jeep Wrangler TJ, at about 103", opposed to 93". This means more interior room for passengers and cargo, and the LJ also came standard with the sought-after Dana-44 rear axle, of note for those looking to take the vehicle off-road. The LJ Unlimited can be traced back to several previous Jeep models, most notably the CJ-8 Scrambler from the 1980's, and is also related to the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) Storm I, which is essentially an LWB (long-wheelbase) Jeep Wrangler YJ, all featuring roughly the same 103" wheelbase.2006-blue-lj-5-7-hemi-seatsThe Jeep Wrangler Unlimited LJ Rubicon was only produced for the 2005-2006 model years, and features many of the same add-ons present in the TJ Rubicon, such as front and rear Dana-44 axles, factory air-lockers, and the 4.10 gear ratio. This model also features full-doors, factory Rubicon rocker-guards, and a soft-top. Originally, this Jeep Wrangler Unlimited LJ Rubicon was bought with several aftermarket add-ons installed by the previous owner, including front fenders by Metalcloak, aluminum front and rear bumpers, a Warn winch, and 33" tires. The modification that really takes the cake, however, is the 5.7L HEMI installed by AEV. The original owner had built a low center of gravity rig that packed some serious punch, on-road or off, but the current owner wanted something a little more factory in appearance.

    2006-blue-lj-5-7-hemi-engineThe Metalcloak fenders, winch, aluminum bumpers, aftermarket fog lights, and other non-OEM accessories were removed, and replaced with stock TJ/LJ front fenders, smoked factory lenses, OEM fog lights, and the bumpers from a late-model TJ. The front fenders were paint matched, and 2003-2006 Rubicon fender flares were added to round out the OEM appearance package. New LT285/75R16 (about 33x11.5) BFGoodrich T/A KO2 All-Terrain tires, and an Old Man Emu 2.5" suspension kit were also installed.2006-blue-lj-5-7-hemi-interiorThe end result is an LJ Rubicon that looks like it could have just rolled off the assembly line, with one secret hidden under the hood, the 5.7L HEMI. With the 2.5" OME lift kit, the 33" tires on factory Rubicon wheels retain the OEM look and proportions of the Jeep LJ. The Rubicon flares provide great tire coverage, making the 33's appear neither offset, or much larger than factory size. To the untrained eye, this may as well be a stock 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon!2006-blue-lj-5-7-hemi-sideThe Jeep Wrangler LJ was discontinued after the 2006 model year, along with the short-wheelbase counterpart, the TJ, and was superseded by the Jeep Wrangler JK and JK-Unlimited, also known as the JKU. The JKU features a 116-inch wheelbase and 4-doors, as opposed to the classic 2-door configuration with the 103" wheelbase, and is the basis for our current builds here at RubiTrux; stay tuned for more!
