  • Product of the Week – Excessive Industries Gate Keeper

Most Jeep Wrangler owners, especially generations prior to the redesigned Jeep Wrangler JK, use an aftermarket swing-out carrier or omit the spare tire altogether when upgrading to a 33-35" tire or larger.   • Vehicle of the Week – Jeep Wrangler YJ Renegade

    1991-jeep-wrangler-yj-renegade-passenger-angle-redThe Renegade was a trim package offered on Jeep Wrangler YJ models during the early-1990's, and prominently featured extended fender flares and side steps. The exterior also included unique front and rear bumpers and integrated fog lamps at the front fenders, markedly similar to the turn signals found on the 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ generation. The Renegade also included several interior upgrades, most notably a center console with cup holders, special high-backed seats with the Jeep logo, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The first year of production for the YJ Renegade was also the first year the 4.0L Inline-6 was offered in the Jeep Wrangler platform. Previously, the YJ Wrangler had used the 4.2L Inline-6. The 4.2L, as well as the standard 2.5L Inline-4, were used in the Jeep CJ and YJ line, with the 4.2L being discontinued for the 1991 model year, replaced with the 4.0L, and with the 2.5L continuing into the Jeep TJ line until 2002.1991-jeep-wrangler-yj-renegade-frontThe Jeep YJ Renegade began life as a Jeep Wrangler featuring the interior options, unique alloy wheels, and other upgrades as ordered; hard top and full-doors remained optional. These vehicles were shipped to American Specialty Cars, where they received exterior upgrades, such as the decal group, fender flares and bumpers, and were then shipped back to the dealer. The Renegade was marketed as a "beach-cruiser", or "high-end" Jeep for younger consumers, rather than a dedicated off-road vehicle. As one can imagine, the oversized fender flares and side steps could become hung up on rocks or trees off-road, leading to costly repairs, in addition to hindering the fitment of larger tires. The Jeep Wrangler YJ Renegade was produced until 1994, and was about a $4-5k option over a base YJ.1991-jeep-wrangler-yj-renegade-front-grille-redThe vehicle we have at the shop is a rust-free, red 1991 Jeep Wrangler YJ Renegade. With the addition of the "family-style" roll-bar in 1992, this makes the '91 the only year Renegade to feature the classic "sport" style roll-bar of the CJ-era. This Jeep features half doors with the "renegade" lettering, decals and pinstripe, and a new Bestop soft top and half door skins. The paint and most of the remaining equipment is original, minus the 30" factory tires being replaced with some 31x10.50r15lt Michelin LTX M/S tires. The owner is looking to restore this Jeep for his personal collection, and minus some areas in the clear coat and one of the tailgate hinges, it's already in great condition! Being a '91, this YJ does feature the 4.0L Inline-6, which is coupled to a 5-speed AX-15 manual transmission and the NP231 transfer case. Axles are the standard Dana 30 (front) and Dana 35 (rear); the Dana-44 was not a factory option until the Jeep TJ began production during the late 1990's.1991-jeep-wrangler-yj-renegade-passenger-door-red1991-jeep-wrangler-yj-renegade-interiorThis YJ Renegade also includes unique high-backed seats with the Jeep logo, a center console with cupholders, interior carpeting, an extended 20-gallon fuel tank, A/C, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel! In this day and age, these options may not seem like much, but back in the 1990's, when the Jeep was still a utilitarian 4x4, with many Wranglers and CJ's featuring a soft top, no A/C, and few cupholders or other amenities, these options were top-of-the-line for a Jeep! Nowadays, there aren't many Jeep Wrangler YJ's left on the road, mostly due to rust problems and the general age of this generation of Wrangler, but every once in awhile, a barn-find comes along. While we don't know for sure if this YJ spent any actual time in a barn, it was certainly well taken care of, and will be around for years to come!1991-jeep-wrangler-yj-renegade-rear-40-decalOnly available for the '91 to '94 model years, YJ Renegades are few and far between among early 1990's 4x4s, and due to the aforementioned age of these vehicles and the given rust issues of the Wrangler platform, these Renegade models are a rare sight, and will certainly turn heads around town, especially to those well-versed in the history of the Jeep Wrangler.   • 2016 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4

Last week, you may have tuned-in for the 2016 Line-X'd Ram pickup, all kitted out in the full AEV Prospector package, with gear by Factor 55 and Decked truck-bed organizers. When lifting a vehicle, it is important to take into consideration how the kit will impact the truck or Jeep, on-road and off. For example, putting a sub-par lift kit on any vehicle will likely ruin the ride quality. While a budget lift kit may not be a bad call on an old Jeep or off-road vehicle, putting a cheap lift-kit on a brand new truck or Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is not the brightest decision around. In addition, some low-budget lift kits are known for less-than-adequate corrosion resistance. In short, you'd not only be sacrificing ride quality and load-carrying capacity in your new truck, but you'd also be opening the door for rust! The truck arrived with most of these accessories, minus the Line-X, already installed. However, the Ram had taken damage on the highway from an 18-wheeler u-joint that was ejected out of the big rig and ended up making contact with the AEV bumper, the Vision-X LED light bar, and one of the front quarter panels.2016-dodge-ram-aev-3-lift-line-x-front-grille-head-onAfter repairing the damage to the pickup, which included a new front quarter panel, light bar, and AEV bumper, we sent the truck out to Line-X, as the owner wanted something a more durable than the factory paint-job. Instead of the usual 3.5” and up lift kit, this Jeep was equipped with an AEV 2.5” DualSport XT lift kit and 35x12.50x17 BFG KM2 M/T tires.   • Vehicle of the Week - 2016 Jeep Wrangler EXT Rubicon

    custom-jeep-wrangler-billet-ext-conversion-lights-onThis week, we're taking a look at this unique 2016 Jeep Wrangler JK-EXT. Most EXT conversions that come through the shop begin life as a Sahara package, and feature 33" or 35" all-terrain tires, a body colored hardtop, and some mild off-road modifications. Not so with this Jeep JK-EXT! This Jeep features the Rubicon package, which means it has the 4:1 Rock-Track Transfer Case and Heavy Duty Dana 44 axles with factory electronic lockers, front and rear, among other goodies. Needless to say, this provides a great platform on which to build an EXT conversion!custom-jeep-wrangler-billet-ext-conversion-aev-3-5-dualsport-rs-liftThe Jeep Wrangler JK-EXT conversion turns a standard, 4-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited into a crew-cab pickup truck, perfect for those who need extra cargo space but still want to have room for camping equipment, gear, or other cargo. The conversion extends the frame 15" after the rear axle, and adds a truck bed with a 40"x43" cargo area, which recieves a complete Line-X treatment, so you can carry a variety of loads without worry of scratching the finish. The factory MOPAR freedom panels are reused, and a custom hard-top is added, enclosing the cab. This kit can also be equipped with a fold down tailgate, but some owners opt to keep the swing-out OEM style tailgate instead.custom-jeep-wrangler-billet-ext-conversion-35-inch-toyo-open-country-mtThis JK-EXT conversion also differs from the other "standard" versions in a few more, minor ways. For this model, the hardtop received a textured black finish, instead of being OEM paint-matched to the body, and the fender flares are not paint matched either, which gives a nice contrast to the Billet body of the EXT. This Jeep also features the new, redesigned Rock-Slide Engineering EXT Bumper, with a tire carrier!
