Rubicon Express Twin-Tube Shocks: Best for the budget. The Rubicon Express twin-tube shocks for Jeeps are developed specifically for each application to deliver comfort without compromising ride quality and stability. A twin-tube shock by design has two cylinders. The outer cylinder serves as a reservoir for the hydraulic fluid, the inner is where the piston and shaft move up and down. There are valves in the piston and in the stationary base valve. The base valve controls fluid flow between both cylinders and provides some of the damping force. The valves in the piston control most of the dampening. A twin-tube shock uses low pressure nitrogen to replace any oxygen air to lessen the aeration and performance fade and degradation. See why a mono-tube design is a more effective shock below.

Rubicon Express Mono-Tube Shocks:Best for ride quality and handling and overall performance. The Rubicon Express Extreme Duty mono-tube shocks for Jeeps are developed and tuned to deliver maximum control and comfort along with ride quality and high speed stability. A mono-tube shock design has a single cylinder divided into two sections, a fluid chamber and a gas chamber. The piston and shaft move in the fluid portion and it uses a single fluid valve assembly in the piston. The diameter of the single working cylinder and piston valve is larger than a twin tube even though the outer body of the shock may be the same size as a twin-tube. Air or gas in the fluid area is not needed so the valve can operate more responsively and without aeration or performance fade. The high pressure gas chamber is separated from the fluid chamber by a floating piston and seal, this provides a nice expansion area for the excess fluid movement during a stroke compression. With more aggressive movement the floating piston is pushed further down into the gas chamber increasing the gas pressure quickly and provides more damping force. The mono-tube design has higher performance capabilities compared to the cheaper twin-tube design and is used in many OEM applications as well as on upgraded suspensions.
