Why do Wranglers & Gladiators have more road noise compared to other vehicles even when new from the factory?

  • Noise enters through gaps, holes, and open windows that is inherent to the Jeep design we all love; we are happy to give up the interiors known in other SUVs & sedans in exchange for removeable doors, tops, and the utilitarian design.
  • Noise & micro-vibrations generated by the engine and mechanical systems running under the Jeep itself, especially with a V8 engine or louder off-road exhaust. Jeeps often run a higher cruising RPM than what came from the factory after adding larger tires, often times even after a regear as we try to get as much power out of the platform as possible.
  • Larger tires add to the overall road noise coming into the cabin of the Jeep as mileage wears on, tire rotations do help but as the tires get used the road noise increases.
  • The main (and correctable) reason for excessive noise in Jeeps is that they come from the factory with almost no automotive insulation like other vehicles to help cut down on the overall cabin noise.

Spectrum Liquid Sound Deadener

Product Highlights:

  • High heat, water based viscoelastic polymer
  • Apply in 1mm layers to the recommended 2mm total thickness (can go up to 5mm)
  • Excellent for hard to reach parts of your vehicle (undercarriage, wheel wells)
  • Temperature rated up to 400°F
  • Apply with a brush, roller, or spray gun
  • Made in the USA

Product Use Tips:

  • Clean up with water within 30 minutes of application. Do not wait longer or Spectrum will dry. Always clean the spray gun between coats by running water through it.
  • If applying multiple layers of Spectrum, wait 30-60 minutes for the product to cure and change color from blue to black.
  • The temperature must be above 50°F for the entire 24 hours cure period after applying Spectrum. Dry times increase with low temperatures and high humidity. If you expect longer than usual dry times, we recommend thinner layers (0.5mm instead of 1mm) to the same total thickness.
  • Spectrum is designed to adhere to metal. Do not apply to plastic or fiberglass without the proper primer. If applying to a high gloss wax coat, you must sand down and apply a primer.
  • Do not freeze Spectrum! If it does freeze, do not mix, shake, or move until it has completely thawed.
  • Wait 24-36 hours (depending on humidity) before putting upholstery back in the vehicle. Wait 7 to 10 days before painting or applying a bed liner.
  • As Spectrum cures, its deadening properties will continue to increase. Vibration damping doubles from 4 hours --> 48 hours, and continues improving for 7 days.
  • Spectrum contains rust inhibitors and dries with a seamless finish. It is water resistant and safe to use for boat soundproofing.
  • Spectrum is not a bed liner. Even after it has cured, it can be damaged by heavy impact.
  • Shelf life of 1 year when stored at room temperature
  • Wheel well sound deadening applications require about 2 gallons for all 4 wheel wells (all vehicles) and helps a good bit with soundproofing car road noise.
  • Use Spectrum anywhere you have vibrating metal to sound proof the structural vibrations.

Luxury Liner Pro Sheeting

Product Highlights:

  • 3/8” thick sheet of fused mass loaded vinyl and closed cell foam
  • Each sheet is 24” x 54” (9 Sq Ft)
  • Weight: 1.25 pounds per square foot
  • Raw virgin mass loaded vinyl (MLV) is flexible and won’t smell, perfect for vehicles
  • Closed cell foam (CCF) acts as a decoupler to simplify installation and adds thermal insulation
  • Temperature Rating: 180°F
  • Insulates for both extreme noise (STC rating: 28) and temperature (r-value per inch: 4.45)
  • Apply with a spray adhesive or strong double-sided tape
  • Made in the USA

Product Use Tips:

  • Second Skin's Luxury Liner Pro comes with a permanently fused foam layer, removing this time consuming step from the install process and adding the R-value of closed cell foam.
  • We recommend our High Temp Spray Adhesive or Super Strong Double Sided Tape to attach the product to the top of the sound deadener. Apply adhesive to the FOAM SIDE with the foam facing downwards.
  • Luxury Liner Pro is heavy and should not be installed to the underside of horizontal surfaces, such as a ceiling.
  • Luxury Liner Pro sheet sizes are ideal for small projects around the house, like building a generator quiet box.
  • Do not apply next to a heat source. Luxury Liner Pro is temperature rated to 180 F.

Why consider Second Skin as a sound deadening solution?

Vibrating metal is loud. Most people would rather live in a quiet, calm environment. The combination of these two facts has birthed an entire industry of sound deadening materials for automotive applications. Sound deadening for cars is usually describing a process called vibration damping, which is when a material is adhered to the metal surface to reduce vibrational noise and or structural noise. There are two primary categories of vibration dampers used in vehicles; sound deadening mats and sound deadening liquids.

Every sound deadening mat has a constraint layer (often aluminum foil) and an elastomeric material that also acts as an adhesive. There’s a lot of math and science behind it, but basically the quality of the materials, the thickness of the materials, and the quality of the bond formed with the application surface determines the effectiveness of the sound deadener.

Second Skin has developed it’s own formula that we use in our Damplifier and Damplifier Pro sound deadening mats. We have not yet found a mat that performs better than Damplifier Pro in lab test and real world environments. The #1 thing to remember about sound deadening mats is that you’re looking for butyl rubber, not asphalt. People buy asphalt because it’s cheaper and they often don’t know better. Unfortunately, you end up spending more because asphalt performs so much worse (butyl damps 3-10x better depending on temperature and the brand), has been known to fail and fall off, and outgases chemicals when heated – class 2B carcinogen type of chemicals. The choice is there for you though.

Sound deadening liquids work the same way as the mats, but they can be painted or sprayed on instead of rolled on with a hand roller. We have our own proprietary formula here too. Spectrum is a water based, viscoelastic polymer formulated for peak vibration damping and adhesion. It’s rustproof, waterproof, chemical resistant, flame resistant, non-toxic, and dries odorless with a seamless, black finish. Just like with the mats, there are low quality options out there. Anything in an aerosol won’t have a nozzle big enough to spray particles big enough for effective sound deadening. They are very convenient to use, but we choose not to offer sound deadening spray in a can because it just doesn’t work all that well. There you have it, this quality kit allows you the best of both worlds with a combination of spray liquid and premium sound deadening matting to provide a complete noise cancelling solution for your Wrangler or Gladiator.

Why Second Skin, why not Dynamat?

RubiTrux as a company is not brand loyal, we install and provide truly premium products that we find to be superior to other quality products; even if those other products are a respectable replacement for what we have experienced to be the best. Dynamat sets a high standard for quality and performance and Second Skin believes they beat the high standard that Dynamat has set in our industry for a very long time and has the data to back it up. This is in no way a knock against Dynamat by Second Skin, they believe it is a nod to their quality and know they are the benchmark of competition in the automotive space. Dynamat doesn't sell good people mediocre asphalt mats that work poorly and could expose them to harmful chemicals and Second Skin has a great respect for that on top of the respect that they have for their quality product, but Second Skin believes they beat on performance, price, and value; and we agree.
